Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin

Tan Sri Asmat graduated from the University of Malaya in 1966 with a Bachelors (Honours) degree in Economics. Early in 1970, he was sent to Amsterdam to follow a special programme on the European Economic Community, where he graduated with distinction. It was soon after that Tan Sri Datuk Asmat left for Brussels, where his responsibilities covered the monitoring of implications for Malaysia in the formation of the European Economic Community, the EEC.

Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin, formerly the Secretary General of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, (MITI) has the unique distinction of having spent the entire span of his career in the Malaysia Civil and Diplomatic Service, in one ministry. He had served in MITI for 35 years, where he had been Secretary General for nine years. Chalking up a long and distinguished career in trade, dealing with both the domestic and international trade sectors, Tan Sri Asmat has also worked with several international bodies such as ASEAN, WTO and APEC, representing Malaysia in relevant negotiations and agreements. In addition, Tan Sri Asmat has been actively involved in several national organisations such as the Permodalan Nasional Berhad, the Johor Corporation, the Small and Medium Scale Industries (SMIDEC), and MARTRADE.

Tan Sri Asmat’s services in the area of trade relations between Japan and Malaysia won him the honour of the Japanese Emperor’s award for contributions to Japanese-Malaysian ties, in 1995.

Tan Sri Asmat was a member of a working group in the NEAC (National Economic Advisory Council). Tan Sri Asmat also sits on the board of JACTIM Foundation as a Governor. He was recently appointed to ERIA (The Economic Research Institute for Asean and East Asia) as a Governor representing Malaysia on the Governing Board.

Currently, Tan Sri Asmat sits on the boards of several local companies that include UMW Holdings Berhad where he is the Group Chairman, and YTL Cement, where he is Vice-Chairman.
